The strap is made of Swedish ecological leather and features the silhoutte of the J29 Tunnan aircraft engraved in gold for the Tunnan Gold and in silver for the Tunnan Silver. The strap is not sold separately. The caseback also includes the silhoutte of the aircraft as well as a unique serial number.

The J29 Tunnan (Swedish for "barrel") is a pilot watch, gathering attribute and inspiration from gauges found in the cockpit and pilot watches from the same era, 1940-1950’s. It’s a watch that has been designed with pure enthusiasm with the ambition to commemorate Swedish aviation and its legacy.

During this era wrist watches was in general smaller in size, something applied to this construction. A slim, 38,5 mm case makes it more dressed and all around than larger and modern pilot watches. The cathedral hands are based on hands in the gauges found in the cockpit, a typical design of pilot watches from the same time. The classic bullseye-dial with vertical brushing is timeless, and its appearance balance the classic flieger-inspired case with its 18k gold plating.

To remain accurate to the 40’s and 50’s, the watch features raised, polished indices and printed second
and minute indices with round discrete spots of lume every five minutes. Combined with a double domed acrylic crystal, giving the dial beautiful light, the watch gives an expression of luxurious vintage.

An aeronautical revolution

J29 was named Tunnan (Swedish for “barrel”) due to its round shape. But in the air, it succeeded all expectations as the first Swedish fighter jet.

The development of the fighter jet began in 1945, and three years later the prototype took flight. Saab had now gone from manufacturing propeller planes to a modern fighter jet in top of its class.

The J29 was equal to the top modern fighter jets manufactured by the largest nations during its time. The technical development was ahead. The J29 was the first aircraft in Europe with swept wings. At two separate occasions its speed broke the world record. During the beginning of 1960, the UN requested a division of J29 Tunnan to aid in the ongoing Congo crisis. The J29 became the first aircraft manufactured by Saab to be used in war.

665 jets were to be manufactured, in five different versions. The production peaked during 1954, one new fighter was delivered per day. The J29 Tunnan remained in service up to 1976 and had also served in the Austrian Air Force.

When using your MALM watch, the watch will be exposed to different types of stresses and strains. Like many other advanced watches and gauges, a very large number of components share a very limited amount of space and like other valuable items you should treat your MALM watch with great care. It is important that you do not expose the watch to unnecessary impacts, chemicals, solvents, hazardous gases, magnetic fields or very cold or hot environments.

The timepiece should be serviced and maintained regularly to work properly. Such services should be performed by MALM or a professional watchmaker for warranty terms to apply. We offer many service options for your watch, from repairing and replacing worn components, pressure testing, resealing, cleaning to polishing, engraving and change dials and more.

Gold plating shall be polished carefully. When plating, the steel is covered with a thin layer of 18 karats gold is applied. If polished too rough, the gold plating will diminish or disappear.

Gold will oxidize over time and can appear discolored. To prevent this you can wash your watch regularly. For advice, please contact MALM.

The watch comes in an exclusive, custom made wooden watch box with premium, suede interior. It both protects the watch and offers a perfect display. Inside the box you will also find:

- Strap tool
- Warranty & Certificate of Authenticity card
- Manual
- Watch cloth
